Thomas Iversen

Tause vitner

23. january – 22. February

The exhibition consists of two projects that are in dialogue with each other, where the focus is on a problematization of the distinction between culture and nature. The procedure in both projects follows a conceptual framework that starts with documentation and collection of materials followed by a processing and breakdown of the matter into small particles. The processed material is then processed into known materials for use in ceramics and graphics.

In the first project, the city's dandruff, Iversen explores the urban landscape in search of pieces that have fallen off buildings, institutions and infrastructure as a source of pigment. He crushes the pieces and mixes them with oils and binders, which he uses to print circles with high pressure.

In the second project, with the working title of Overgrown paths, Iversen explores Norwegian nature and mining history. For several years, he has traveled around Norway and brought in materials from mines and deposits. The project tells something about Norway's unique geological history and in this way also Norway's history linked to social and cultural conditions that spring from natural deposits of resources. Among other things, the artist has obtained cobalt in the mines of the Blåfargeverket, feldspar and quartz in Spro mines, rutile in Kragerø, iron ore in Sogn mines, chrome ore in Feangen, lead and zinc in Tråk mines, nickel in Evje, manganese in Vennesla and dolomite in Fauske. He has processed these materials into fine pigments for use in glazes and ceramics. Where the city's dander stretches towards the urban and processed, overgrown paths stretch towards nature and the untouched.

Thomas Iversen graduated MFA in graphics from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2019. He has participated in exhibitions in Kristiansand kunsthall (2023), Nitja senter for samtidskunst, Lillestrøm, (2022), Høstutstillingen 2021, Oslo, and Årsutstillingen 2019, Bergen.
