RAM Gallery
20th anniversary-exhibition

November 19th 2009 - February 14th 2010

An attempt to implode/explode The White Cube

- a layered time, space and place construction

by Rolf Gerstlauer (curator)

Preview on Wednesday 18 November at 14.00.

James Carpenter and Rolf Gerstlauer will be present.

RAM gallery has since its inception in 1989 shown 170 artistic projects and had more than 4,000 exhibition days. The reason for starting the gallery was a need for a different type of exhibition space for public art, installations, applied art and textile. Ram gallery has helped to fill this need. The gallery has over the years shown solo- and group projects of both young graduates and more established artists. The gallery was early known as a pioneer with regards to spatial solutions, and the presentation of installations. The exhibition space has increasingly been offering the unpredictable by changing the visual character between each exhibition. With this open exhibition profile, the gallery has intended to highlight the artistic intentions and to give the public a rich art experience in a unique gallery space.

To celebrate this complex and varied history RAM gallery has invited the architect and Professor Rolf Gerstlauer to create the anniversary exhibition.

Gerstlauer’s curatorial strtingpoint, and recurrent theme is the white cube. The white cube represents a desire for an objective and neutral exhibition space where the meeting between art and beholder may take place without interference. This is of course an impossible ideal, as everything is always part of a context. For the exhibition opening on 19 November, James Carpenter and Davidson Norris have re-opened RAM gallery, and blasted the white cube. Light from New York is projected from the outside of the gallery, through a previously hidden window and into the exhibition space. The room appears to be empty, but a context is added from the outside. The mixing of New York-light and the gallery space forms the basis for other artistic contributions. Throughout the exhibition period artists / architects / designers have been invited to help continue the implosion / explosion of the white cube. The contributions’ expressions will vary, but all must relate to the gallery space already having been infected by previous activities. Thus, the deconstruction of the white cube will be multilayered. The different contributions will be announced approximately one week in advance. The anniversary exhibition and all the contributions will be documented and collected in a book.

Welcome to the opening on Thursday 19 November at 19.00
