MÅLTID & KUNSTNERSAMTALE

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE GLUKLYA (NATALYA PERSHINA-YAKIMANSKAYA)

22 Feb 2017

Welcome to a meal and a conversation between Gluklya (Natalya Pershina-Yakimanskaya) and curator Anna Bitkina/TOK Creative Association of Curators, Wednesday 22nd February 7-11 PM at Deichmanske Library Schous Plass

Public talk of Anna Bitkina and Gluklya (Natalya Pershina-Yakimanskaya)
at Deichmanske Library, Schous Plass, Oslo.

During their presentation curator Anna Bitkina and artist Gluklya (Natalya Pershina-Yakimanskaya) will talk about their research for the upcoming project 'Debates on Division' that they conduct in collaboration with RAM Galleri, Deichmanske Library Schous Plass, and several organizations for youth in Oslo. The results of the research will be presented in a format of an exhibition at RAM Gallery and a public performance in a theater location in Oslo in June 2017.
'Debates on Division: When the Private Becomes Public' is an ongoing project that Gluklya and Anna Bitkina have been conducting since 2014 in different places and with different local contexts. It is a project about political, social and ideological divisions as well as about the position of the individual amid those conflicts. The performance takes place in the format of a TV talk show and evolves around personal stories of individuals that talk about their clothes (a piece of their wardrobe) that had a significant meaning in their lives. By presenting such personal stories Gluklya and Anna Bitkina aim at creating a discursive platform for individual voices and reflection upon the impact of public policy on people’s lives as well as collectively analyze current local socio-political conflicts and their global implications.
First time the performance was presented as a part of the public program at Manifesta 10 in St Petersburg and later in 2016 at SMBA - Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam and at the Creative Time Summit in Washington DC.

In Oslo, they'd like to compose 'Debates on Division' around question of the future by collecting stories of young people (approx 15 - 17 years) about their future professions, social and political positions, as well as their visions of the future. We also would like to touch upon imperfections of social/governmental structures and policy towards youth when it come to selection of future professions. Questions of citizenship and civic positions will also be in focus of our research. Personal stories of selected young people will bring into light important issues related to the current youth policy in Norway and strategies the Norwegian government uses to form young citizens. The discussion around stories could also lead into more general discussion around the future of Europe and an agency of young generation within society.

During the talk Gluklya and Anna Bitkina will also speak about previous iterations of 'Debates on Division' project and will make screenings of videos based on documentation of these performances.

After the talk we'll be happy to invite the audience for a dinner that will be served free of charge in the library.

Gluklya (Natalya Pershina-Yakimanskaya) lives and works in St Petersburg, Russia and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Considered as one of the pioneers of Russian Performance she co-founded the artist collective The Factory of Found Clothes (FFC) which uses installation, performance, video, text and “social research” to develop the concept of “fragility” – relationships between internal and external and private and public. In 2012 FFC was reformulated to the Utopian Unemployment Union, a project uniting art, social science and progressive pedagogy allowing people from different social rounds to meet ad make art together. Since 2003, Gluklya has also been a co-founder an active member of Chto Delat? group. Gluklya’s work has been exhibited in Russia and abroad in numerous groups shows as well as solo shows, including Wings of Migrants, Gallery Akinci, Amsterdam (2012); Utopian Unions, MMOMA, Moscow (2013), Reflecting Fashion, MUMOK Vienna, (2013 ), Dump Dreams, Scedhalle Zurich, ( 2013); Debates on Division: When the Private Becomes Public, Manifesta 10, Public Program, St. Petersburg (2014), Hero Mother, Berlin (2016), Universal Hospitality (2016), Vienna; Feminism is Politics, Pratt Institute, NY (2016) as well as Clothes for Demonstration Against False Election of Vladimir Putin, 56th Venice Biennale of Art, All the World’s Futures, curated by Okwui Enwezor (2015). In 2014, Gluklya was the recipient of a fellowship in visual art awarded by The Joseph Brodsky Memorial Fund.

Anna Bitkina is an independent curator, director, and co-founder of The Creative Association of Curators (TOK). In her curatorial practice, she is interested in issues related to the concept of public space in post-Soviet Russia, as well as on perception, understanding and mechanisms of use of public spaces and open areas by residents of post-Soviet cities. In her projects, she explores a changing role of cultural workers and possibilities of creative practices in different social spheres. TOK is curatorial collective based in St Petersburg and founded by Anna Bitkina and Maria Veits in 2010 as a platform for conducting interdisciplinary projects in the fields of contemporary art and design and social sciences. Started as a grass-root initiative, TOK is an example of a new form of self-organised, nomadic, and sustainable art institution that responds to social needs nationally and internationally. Working primarily in public spaces and with state institutions, TOK bases its curatorial methods on the principles of ‘soft power’ and professional dialogue. In their projects, TOK aims to find like-minded people in governmental institutions, establish dialogues with them, and develop conditions for an open discussions, analyses, and criticism of current political system. Through its projects, TOK also develops and demonstrates alternative scenarios of how the system could operate. They apply their practice to the Russian educational system, youth organizations, local governments, media and others.

Gluklya (Natalya Pershina-Yakimanskaya)s residency in Oslo has been made possible through a grant for International artist exchange from The City of Oslo.
